2024 Carol Competition Winner

Meet the winner of our 2024 Carol Competition

Chamber choir Granta Chorale, led by its musical director Janet Wheeler, gave a superb Christmas concert on Saturday 14th December 2024 at All Saints’ Church (The Painted Church), Jesus Lane, Cambridge. The programme featured the première of the winning carol in this year’s Granta Chorale Carol Competition.

Young composers had been invited to set The Refugee Carol, a specially commissioned poem by Moyra Tourlamain. Five entries were workshopped by the choir, and first prize - a performance by the choir and a cash award - went to Thomas Strudwick. Thomas is a student at King’s School Ely where he has recently been awarded the King's Ely and Ely Cathedral Sixth Form Organ Scholarship for next year.

Pictured between the judges, composers Janet Wheeler and Sarah Cattley, are prize-winner Thomas Strudwick and poet Moyra Tourlamain.
